What's in it?
McAfee's Internet Security 2005 includes McAfee SpamKiller 6.0, McAfee VirusScan 9.0 and McAfee Personal Firewall Plus 6.0. There is also the subscription-only McAfee Privacy Service
Effectiveness
Mcafee's VirusScan is one of the best-known and most popular antivirus products on the internet today. If that weren't enough, it has received numerous third-party certifications as well. These include Virus Bulletin (www.virusbt.com) which awarded Mcafee VirusScan a %100 rating for detecting and removing viruses. VirusScan also received Checkmark certification from West Coast Labs (www.westcoast.com) for virus detection, virus removal, and Trojan detection.
Privacy and parental control features are useful if you want to control how your PC is used by other family members. SpamKiller will filter the incoming mail for any Outlook email account. It will also scan Hotmail and MSN accounts.
Support and Updates
VirusScan requires you to got through a registration process in order to download updates. Once that's done however, virus signature updates happen every 24 hours. This is automated too, so you won't need to do it yourself. The update process does require Internet Explorer, so this may be a problem if you're using an alternative browser.
The Mcafee support site - www.McafeeHelp.com - has a quite good range of free FAQs. The other support options are paid-only. You can have phone support for $64.95, or internet-based chat support for $29.95.
What we love about Mcafee :
- Excellent antivirus protection
- McAfee's Privacy Service prevents personal data from being sent over the internet.
- Parental control features.
Not so good :
- Antispam product not as rich as other suites.
- Parental control accounts are separate from the windows logins.
- $20 rebate applies only to US and Canda.
Summary
For an all-in-one security solution you can hardly go wrong with Mcafee. It's dead-simple to install and very easy to run. This is something that every home PC should have.
